Often when I am creating artwork, the title comes to me when I am in the process of painting the image. In the early stages of “Twilight at the Treasury” a fetal shape appeared. Because of this I felt this piece was about birth. I began to ponder where souls might reside before they are born. I remembered a delightful story from Jewish mythology which I felt described the subject of my painting. According to the mythology, in the Garden of Eden there is a "Tree of Souls" that blossoms and produces new souls, which fall into the Guf, or the "Treasury of Souls". The angel Gabriel reaches into the treasury and takes out the first soul that comes into his hand. Then Lailah, the Angel of Conception, watches over the embryo until it is born. I imagine the progression of souls as they develop and become ready for birth. I like to think that the souls in my painting are quietly sleeping and waiting for their turn to be born.
